Do you want to be a REGIO STAR?
The deadline for submitting your project to RegioStars 2009 – the European Awards for Regional Innovative Projects – is fast approaching.

Earlier this year, a West Midlands company, EnviroINNOVATE, won a RegioStars 2008 award for the most innovative regional project. EnviroINNOVATE, the winning project in the category ‘Energy Technology transfer from research institutes to SMEs’ is run by the Technology Innovation Centre at Birmingham City University with support from AWM.

The RegioStars jury stated that "EnviroINNOVATE is a good example of a professionally managed, innovative project also demonstrating that financially small project projects can have important impacts... The approach is innovative as well as being sustainable and cost-efficient. The number of universities involved is also impressive.”

The deadline of 15 July 2008 for submitting applications to next years’ RegioStars Awards is now approaching – can the West Midlands repeat this year’s great success?

The objective of the awards scheme, as detailed to partners in previous editions of the West Midlands in Europe weekly newsletter, is to identify good practices in regional development and to highlight original and innovative projects which could be attractive and inspiring to other regions.

The RegioStars 2009 awards are open to the following three categories, all of whom must have benefited from European funding:

1) Research, Technological Development and Innovation

2) Adaptation to or mitigation of climate change

3) Radio or television spot or programme that highlights the contribution of Cohesion Policy

Application forms and further information on categories, subcategories and eligibility are available at http://ec.europa.eu/regional_policy/cooperation/interregional/ecochange/regiostars_en.cfm?nmenu=4#c

Completed application forms must be submitted by 15 July 2008 at the latest to: regio-stars@ec.europa.eu

RegioStars 2009 winners will be announced at the next Regions for Economic Change conference, in March 2009. The winners will receive a trophy awarded by the European Commissioner for Regional Policy and the president of the jury. The European Commission DG for Regional Policy will also produce a film on the winning projects which they will use in publicising and disseminating their good practice.
